MPJE and NAPLEX Tips: CE Requirements for Pharmacists? At every renewal?

Pharmacy licenses expire at a set cadence. As such, renewal of a license requires the completion of continuing education activities. All states in the United States require a pharmacist to complete continuing education (CE) hours every year or by the license renewal timeline. Here are things to keep in mind related to this topic:

You should know the following:

  1. Are you licensed in multiple states? You should satisfy the CE requirements for each state you seek to maintain licensure in

  2. Know how many CE units/hours are required

  3. Know if there are specific topics you should complete: ex: opioids, Suicide prevention, telepharmacy, etc.…

  4. Know if specific topics should be completed once or recurrent. If recurrent, at what schedule

  5. CE must be accredited by the BOP or ACPE

  6. Know CE requirements for online/virtual training

Generally, 1 CE unit is 10 contact hours.

Here are some MPJE questions you might get

The local university/pharmacy department just launched a new in-person CE covering tele-pharmacy to help shed light on the law requirements pharmacist should be aware of. You wish to claim the CE credit towards the requirement for pharmacist license renewal. Which of the following should you verify (and be true) about this training? (Select all that apply)

  1. ACPE accreditation of the CE

  2. The affiliated PharmD program at the university is ACPE accredited

  3. The instructor must hold a PharmD

  4. The program is approved by BOP

  5. The program is approved by NABP

Answer Key: #1 , #4. ACPE accredited CE is always approved by the BOP; in addition to that, BOP may approve additional training/CE programs.
