NAPLEX and MPJE Tips: Can a pharmacist licensed in a state work in any state?

People move around between states. Wouldn’t it be great if a pharmacist can practice in any state at any time? Unfortunately, this is not the case. Well, not without additional requirements and licensure.

To start with, you must have a pharmacist license in the state you want to practice in. if you move between states, you need additional pharmacist licenses. Fortunately, you can transfer your pharmacist license from one state to another. You will need to take additional exams, mainly MPJE. You must also satisfy all/additional license requirements set forth by the board.

Note that pharmacy laws vary widely by state. This short article covers generic/general information and helps establish a baseline of minimum required knowledge in the topic. Always check the state board laws for complete and comprehensive details.

Here are some questions you might get on the MPJE:

Sara is a licensed pharmacist in another state and recently moved to this state.

  1. Can Sara start practicing pharmacy immediately?

  2. Can Sara practice as a pharmacy intern immediately?

  3. Can Sara practice as a pharmacist right after passing the MPJE for this state?

  4. Can Sara practice as a pharmacist right after submitting the application to the BOP of this state?

Answer key

  1. No, she is not licensed yet

  2. No, she does not have an intern license from this state

  3. No, Sara must wait for her license to be issued
