NAPLEX and MPJE tips: Pharmacy Internship Hours. State Internship Hours Vary. How many do you need?

This article covers the internship hours a pharmacy intern needs to complete to satisfy the internship requirements to become a licensed pharmacist in the United States. The assumption is that the pharmacy intern is enrolled in an ACPE accredited PharmD program. Internship hours for foreign-trained pharmacists can vary from those of local graduates.

Note that pharmacy laws vary widely by state. This short article covers generic/general information and helps establish a baseline of minimum required knowledge in the topic. Always check the state board laws for complete and comprehensive details.

Most states require pharmacy interns to complete at least 1500 hours in pharmacy practice. In general, you start accumulating internship hours when you start your professional program (with some states requiring you to complete the P1 first). The PharmD program has built-in APPE and internship hours that satisfy the board requirements.

States with slightly different internship hours requirements

  • Florida – 2080 hours

  • Illinois – 400 hours + PharmD internship hours

  • Kansas / Nevada – 1740 hours

  • Louisiana / Ohio / Vermont – 1740 hours

  • Michigan / Minnesota / Mississippi – 1600 hours

  • Oregon – 1440 hours

  • South Dakota – 2000 hours

Taking practice MPJE®/NAPLEX® exams is key to passing the board exams on the first try. Practice exams:

1.   Expose you to time constraints and help you build mental stamina

2.   Expose you to different questions (K-type, select all, etc.)

3.   Expose you to random topics with various difficulties

4.   Expose you to new answer choices

5.   Help demystify the exams and ease test anxiety
